The Hindu Crossword 1001 [October 19, 1974]

I hope you enjoyed battling with The Hindu Crossword 1000 set by Admiral Katari, the first crossword compiler of The Hindu. Admiral Katari's family has kindly shared two of his crosswords with us, here is the second of the lot – The Hindu Crossword 1001. This crossword was originally published in The Hindu on the same date as today, exactly 38 years ago.

Interactive Across Lite version created by Chaturvasi, available here: THC 1001 Interactive.

Have fun solving. I found this slightly easier than the previous crossword. Perhaps solving one built some familiarity with the setter's style? What do you think?

The same rules apply: enter your answers with annotations in the comments section. Max 3 answers per person.

I'll update this post with the solutions on October 22, 2012 (Monday).

I feel this was a mite tougher than the earlier one. But good style, and there could be some merit in THC coming out with a rerun of old crosswords.

Also wish I hadn't started with paper version and waited for CV's interactive aid.

As for my quota of 3 answers:
25A: CONUNDRUM (CO+NUN+DRUM)
23A: HIERARCHY (HI+ARCHERY*)
17D: CATECHISM (GK/E type clue, play on Question Hour)

5a FLAPPER double definition

11a CHISELLER CHI - female, SELLER - vendor
Not sure why CHI is female. AFAIK Chi is the balance of Yin and Yang, of which Yin is the male energy and Yang is the female energy.

18a PLEASANCE double definition

@Rajiv: I thought the same about 11a. Let's see if someone else has a better explanation.

To be solved:
9a, 15a, 18a, 27a
1d, 2d, 3d, 4d, 5d, 6d, 8d, 14d, 18d, 22d, 23d, 24d

Re 11a: I took it as just a name.

Shuchi: nothing further on this?

Hi Bhala,

No more responses came in via the comment form, and then I got a mail that there's some trouble with posting comments. Is anyone else facing a similar problem? I believe there is a change in blogger's captcha process.

Or maybe everyone's away for Durga Puja!

In any case, since I'd promised to share the answers on the 22nd I have updated the main post with the solutions in the Admiral's hand + my own annotated answers. Let me know if your parsing differs for any of the clues.

Regarding CHI (11a), it might be just a name as you say - if so, I think the clue is a tad unfair as CHI is not a usual name.

Thanks for playing everyone and wish you a happy Durga Puja.

Oh, I didn't realise that the solution had been posted, I did not get a notification (wonder why).

Will check.

Yes, I too had difficulty with putting in earlier post, had to try about half a dozen times before it accepted

The link for annotated answers seems dead, nothing opens when I click on it

@Bhala: I can see this comment inside blogger's admin panel but not on the blog...looks like blogger is acting up in multiple ways!

That link opens for me. Are you able to access the annotated answers link in the previous post, for THC 1000?

Bhalchandra Pasupathy said...

Yes, can see the earlier annotated solution

Shuchi said...

I've adjusted the setting so that the link opens in another window. Can you check if it works now?

Does anyone else face the same problem in opening the annotation sheet?

Bhalchandra Pasupathy said...

yeah, works fine now.

For some reason, I am not able to access Deepak Gopinath's blog on the Hindu Crossword for some time now. But from the google search it looks as though the blog is functional and some people are able to access it. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Vikram

Hi Vikram,

THCC is definitely functional. There has been a URL redirect of Indian blogs from *.com to *.in, could that be causing the problem? Try the link http://thehinducrosswordcorner.blogspot.in/.

Can you access the blog if you search on Google and click on the results?
